Sara Berman is a British artist and former fashion designer who lives and works in London. Her figurative paintings are an exploration of the uncomfortable nooks of the female bodily experience. Featuring the motif of the female harlequin in each of her pieces, and being deeply informed by her understanding of fashion and textiles, Berman focuses on materiality as it relates to our perception of self and others. For Berman, the recurring similarity of the figure in each of her paintings is not the issue of significance. Rather, it is the personality and emotion shown through the figures’ physical gestures and stances, as well as the textures and shapes of their clothing. Brought together, the minute details and subtle imperfections in her work speak volumes about the sensation of being in the female body.
Berman’s work has been extensively exhibited, including at Art Fair Miami, Enter Art Fair in Copenhagen, Bonhams London and Kristin Hjellegjerde London Bridge.
