Maddalena Fanfani (b.1980) is an Italian artist who grew up watching Japanese manga. After finishing art college she pursued a career in Fashion Design at the Istituto Marangoni in Milan, where she started exhibiting acrylic paintings alongside her studies. She moved to London in 2005 to work in fashion and further her professional experience in graphic design and art. To Fanfani, art is the processing language of life. Experiences are internalised through the senses, processed in abstractions, and output in painting.

Dreams are the unearthing of unconscious fictions, of which Maddalena Fanfani attempts to reveal. She paints figures like splatters of colours, creating themselves autonomously as the hand transmutes thought to canvas. Inspired by cartoon and manga, her characters are adorably grotesque and formed from layers upon layers of pastel references to various drawing styles. The dreamlike landscapes and characters reflect on the Mad world of Maddalena Fanfani.
