Billy Gibney (b. 1995) is an Australian artist working primarily in oil painting. His practice explores the relationship between identity and the objects through which it is defined. Characterised by intimate, close-up figurative imagery alongside depictions of personal items, heirlooms, and mementos, Gibney’s work reflects how objects tether us to people, moments, and past versions of ourselves.

Gibney’s source material is drawn from a range of his own photography, cinematic stills, online auctions, and personal artefacts. His works often incorporate materials such as volcanic rock, crushed glass, and wax into the painted surface, building thick, scarred textures. As a result, the canvases appear stone-like, almost fossilised - creating a sense of preservation and permanence amid an image saturated world.

Popcorn and cascade bidding:

If a bid is placed during the last 1 minute of the auction, the closing time will be automatically extended for an additional 1 minute from the time the last bid was placed. The item will close once all bidding activity has stopped. This is recommended for high-value and popular items. Popcorn bidding prevents bidders from waiting until the last minute to bid without giving the bidders who were outbid an opportunity to rebid.

Cascade bidding ensures auction lots close at staggering times, one after another. For example, the first lot of an auction might close at 12:01pm, the second lot would close at 12:02pm, then the third lot at 12:03pm, etc.
