Natalie Westbrook (b. 1980) is a painter based in Pittsburgh, PA, with a BFA from Cooper Union, an MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies from the University of Louisville, and her MFA from Yale University. Despite her impressive academic credentials, her work is incredibly focused on the “here and now.” It is dramatically attached to the natural environment, pushing the ontological boundaries of how we see the non-human world.
Her paintings are intersections rather than investigations, evoking the invisible connections between humanity, environment, and imagination. Often abstract, Westbrook’s practice allows for complete imaginative freedom, embracing the uninhibited agency of natural intelligences upon her subconscious. Furthermore, she is an animator of space; using vibrant colour and movement to give eyes to the gallery walls in order to remind her audience of a perception beyond their own.
