Ryo Laksamana (aka Ryol b. 1993) is an Indonesian artist producing virtuous tributes to childhood and pop icons. With massive, emotional eyes, his adolescent figures combine historical references and Saturday morning cartoons in a playfully spectral way. His work is inspired by the translated manga and anime from his childhood, featuring pokemon, star wars, and the flintstones to name a few. Each character is in a surreal contextualisation of space and geometry, produced with either intuitive line work or refined shading and precise painting. His big eyed people are a part of a larger trend in pop art, referencing the doe-like eyes of the American artist Margaret Keane in the 1950s.
