Tom Gerrard is an Australian painter whose heightened observation makes for a rich practice with specific attention to suburban life. His professional style developed on the streets as a muralist, brandishing his world with a reflective gaze. Gerrard's work collapses a space with bold, flat colours bound in black line work by gracefully incorporating spray paint and airbrushed acrylic. His figures are reinterpreting graffiti, replacing baggy pants and skateboards with receding hairlines.

Tom Gerrard’s work is wonderfully at play with his environment by reappropriating motifs such as chainlink fences or rubbish bins. This careful act of plucking pieces from his surroundings and uplifting them with adornment shows his mastery of the mural. For a mural shouldn’t only enhance the wall itself, but enrich the community who commissioned it. When put to canvas, Gerrard's ideas instead confront his surroundings, selectively appreciating architectural and cultural artefacts.

Tom has exhibited in Los Angeles, Barcelona and Tokyo, and his works have been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria. He is an active international muralist, having been commissioned in London, Berlin, Quito and Rio de Janeiro.
