Michael McGrath (b. 1977) is an American artist living in the Hudson Valley of New York. His paintings are pastoral and mythological, featuring recurring characters of nature and fiction. On swaths of watchful plants, his colourful humanoids shock and smile at each other while bat-like creatures loom in the background. Each painting seems as though it could have been picked from an ancient tarot card or Scandinavian folk tapestry where the figures tell a story through their relationship to others on the canvas. They remark on death, the dead, foxes, fires, plastic; things that haunt him in the mundane acts of the everyday. His art watches the world in a very specific peaceful style, perfectly balancing often unsettling figures with the serenity of nature. In late 2022 he had an exhibition in Cornwall, UK and was part of two art fairs in China, one in Shanghai, one in Beijing.
