Gideon Rubin, 48, is an Israeli-born contemporary artist based in London, whose paintings commonly deal with the subjects of memory, history and identity. Primarily working from existing photographic source material, such as old photo albums, Rubin’s work is discernible for containing abstracted and faceless subjects. Having been removed from their original context, his subjects implore viewers to focus not on specific identities or places, but on their own memories that are brought to the fore in the process.
This sense of introspection that Rubin’s work evokes is therefore not limited in its geographical or cultural scope: it has meant that his work is well represented in prestigious public collections worldwide, such as the Herzliya Museum for Contemporary Art, Israel. Moreover, Rubin has featured in solo and group exhibitions on an international scale for over two decades; his most recent solo exhibitions include those at the RYAN LEE Gallery in New York and Fox Jensen Galleries in Sydney and Auckland.
