Ha Haengeun was born in Jindo, South Korea in 1985. After majoring in Western painting at Deokwon Arts High School, she went on to study art at Hongik University, where she indulged in Oriental painting, Oriental philosophy, Zen, and Indian mysticism. She liked to draw from an early age, but the reason she started working on art in earnest was after reading a book called Zhuangzi’s “Butterfly Dream” in college and feeling mentally free and liberated. She dreamed of expressing ‘art’ through painting.

The complex stories of ‘nature’, ‘human’, ‘art’, and ‘everyday life’, derived from her curiosity and thoughts about the question ‘Who am I?’, appear on the canvas. The figures in her work reveal features of a baby, a girl, and an elderly woman at the same time and therefore the circle of life within one figure. The figure is far frome the standard of beauty and is a free being at a certain boundary. And in one figure, the old is willing to give way to the new and coexist with each other.

She pursues the truth by balancing and harmonizing the opposing things. As opposed to ‘death’, which was the problematic consciousness of her early 20s, she reinterpreted ‘birth’. When she looked at a newborn, he reminded her of an old man, and at the same time she thought that he was in a state of freedom and a being of possibility that was in contact with the invisible and unknown boundary. And while acknowledging that feelings of death and emptiness have arisen within her, she actively draws light into her own paintings to counteract negative feelings and move forward with the positivity of life. It is similar to the method of making ‘0’ by actively generating an opposing one.

Ha draws based on what she sees in her own reality, but freely travels through her time through her work. She often borrows classical art yet her work is related to her own realistic life. During her student years, she had access to famous art-historical works, both in printed art books and in a variety of popular media. Classical art was as close to her life as common pop culture and made her dream enjoyable. Her work is a metaphor for life and art, and her personal feelings and experiences in the world she lives in are actively reflected on the canvas.

Currently, she lives and works in Seoul, she communicates with the world through exhibitions not only in Korea but also abroad.

하행은은 1985년 한국의 진도에서 태어났다. 덕원 예술고등학교에서 서양화를 전공후 홍익대학교 미술대학에 진학하였고 동양화, 동양철학, 선, 인도의 신비주의에 탐닉했다. 어린 시절부터 그리기를 좋아했으나 본격적으로 작업을 하게 된 계기는 대학시절에 장자의 <나비의 꿈>이라는 책을 읽고 정신적인 자유와 해방감을 느낀 이후부터였다. 그림으로써 ‘예술’을 표현하는 것을 꿈꿨다.

그의 화두였던 ‘나는 누구인가?’라는 질문에 대한 호기심과 생각이 파생되어 나온 ‘자연’, ‘인간’, ‘예술’, ‘일상’ 등에 대한 복합적인 삶의 이야기들은 상징적인 표현을 통해 은유되며 캔버스 위로 드러난다. 작업에서 드러나고 있는 인물은 특정한 나이가 없이 아이, 소녀, 여인, 노인의 모습을 동시에 담아내며 한 인물 안에서 생성과 소멸이 순환하고 있다. 그 인물은 미의 기준에서 벗어나 있으며 어떤 경계에 있는 자유로운 존재이다. 그리고 한 인물 안에서 나이 든 것이 새로운 것에게 기꺼이 자리를 내어주며 서로 상생하고 있다.

그는 대립되는 것의 균형과 조화를 이루며 진리를 추구해 나간다. 20대 초반의 문제의식이었던 ‘죽음’에 대립하여 ‘탄생’을 재해석했다. 신생아를 보면서 노인을 연상하는 동시에 그가 보이지 않는 미지의 경계와 맞닿아 있는 가능성의 존재이자 자유의 상태에 있다고 가정하였다. 그리고 그는 내면에 죽음과 허무의 감정이 일어난 것을 인정하되 자신의 그림 안에 밝은 빛을 적극적으로 끌어들여서 서로를 상쇄시키고 생의 긍정으로 나아가는 작업 방식을 취하고 있다. 하나가 일어나면 대립되는 또 하나를 적극적으로 발생시켜서 ‘0’으로 만드는 방식과 유사하다.

그는 자신의 현실에서 본 것을 기반으로 하되 작업을 통해서 자유롭게 시간 여행을 떠난다. 그가 종종 고전 미술을 빌려와서 작업하는 것은 자신의 현실적인 삶과 관계되어 있다. 그는 학생 시절에 미술사적인 작품들을 인쇄된 미술책이나 다양한 대중적인 매체로 접했다. 고전 미술은 흔한 대중문화만큼 그의 삶과 가까이 있고 즐거운 꿈을 꾸게 해주는 것이었다. 그의 작업은 삶과 예술에 대한 은유이자 지금 시대적인 상황에 대한 개인적인 감정이나 경험이 적극적으로 반영되어 있다.

현재 서울에서 살며 작업하고 있고 국내외의 전시를 통해서 세상과 소통하고 있다.
