EMKI, an artist working from a small town outside of Liverpool tests personal and cultural mythologies through art. Primarily in acrylic and spray paint, EMKI paints gods, beasts, warriors, and spirits, clashing amongst themselves in a kaleidoscope of “unadulterated colour.” His characters are amalgamations of cartoon-esque mythical representations wherein each myth depicts a part of himself. The good, the bad, and the ugly; each attribute is made tangible by obvious and non-obvious figures in a spacey setting. By sculpting these intangible attributes together with dreams and ambitions, EMKI has allowed himself to create wholly original characters that autonomously “battle” his demons. From a gaze into EMKI’s archive, it is clear that through years of experimentation he has managed to return to the playful nature of a child. He can find the simple spirit of drawing itself and focus on the fun in the pursuit of putting one’s mind to paper. Alumni of Leeds Arts University, formerly Leeds College Of Art, he graduated in 2016 with a BA in fine arts.
