Annan Affotey (b. 1985, Accra, Ghana) is an Oxford-based painter whose vibrant, textured portraits explore Black identity, perception, and narrative. A graduate of Ghanatta College of Art and Design, he began exhibiting in Accra before co-founding the African Young Artist Organisation. After moving to the US in 2014 and later the UK, he developed a distinctive style defined by bold colour, sculptural texture, unfinished details, and his iconic “red-eye” motif - born from personal experiences of misread identity. His work has been shown internationally, with solo shows including Windows to the Soul, The Journey and Nature’s Complexions, alongside group exhibitions and a mural commission for Tommy Hilfiger. Through his portraits, Affotey celebrates the beauty and complexity of Blackness while inviting deeper emotional connection.
