Peter Tunney’s (b.1961) work spans text, sculpture, print, performance, and photography. A single word or phrase permeates his painting as pervasively as advertising, influenced by uniquely american staples and obsessions. Referencing the aesthetics of pop art, Tunney recontextualizes found magazine and newspaper imagery with painting’s proclaiming his positive slogans such as ‘LOVE,’ ‘GRATITUDE,' and ’The Time is Always Now.’ He is a philanthropist as much as he is an artist, believing in the ability of small acts of kindness. He has more recently aimed his philanthropic practice at systemic mental health reform and supporting wrongfully convicted individuals.
