Contextualising cartoons in art history or blurring lines between modern and classical imagery, Tim Gatenby's (British, b. 1987) work parodies culture through painting. Behind the playful and idiosyncratic moments found in his paintings, is often a dark humour picking apart the convenience of modern life. Motifs of dulled pop characters and fast food reflect the pressures of consumerism and a societal slip toward over indulgence. Gatenby's distorted nostalgia acts as a dirty mirror of our time, plastering quotidian imagery onto his vision of a commodified world. Despite the dark undertones, his paintings are full of jokes, visual puns, and fun designed to contrast with the heaviness of life.
