Brussels based artist Lenny Mathé uses the energy of the sun to create during the day, and that of the moon to reflect in the evening. His work reflects this practice. Each painting is naturally birthed from the conditions of its becoming. The grains of the paper establish his imagined rays of light or the map-cum-canvas informs the works title. Mathé’s process gives way to the agency of each tool or material, akin to a sculptor’s conversation with wood or stone. In this way Mathé reminds us of the world we share with the more-than-human world; with the nature we often forget we are a part of.

As a form of communication, he tends to use simple graphic techniques to convey ideas to the child inside of us. Its simplicity goes against the elitism that often encloses art to the privileged, by showing that complexity can be painted without formal training Mathé attempts to democratize art.
