“My paintings are a response to the fabric of everyday life. I draw inspiration from a constantly shifting mix of influences; fashion, music, memories, the changing seasons and the places I move through. These encounters create a visual energy that finds its way into my work. I am particularly fascinated by the relationship between the urban and natural environments, and the way light transforms the atmosphere of a place. I am drawn to the shadows cast across buildings, streets, trees and open spaces; to those fleeting black silhouettes that stretch, distort and disappear as the light changes.
Shadow has a particular presence in my work. It can alter the character of a familiar landscape, creating a sense of drama. I am interested in these subtle shifts and in the way our surroundings can feel completely different from one moment to the next.
Ultimately, my work comes from looking closely. It is the things I notice, the fragments, contrasts, colours, shapes and atmospheres of everyday life that shape my paintings and inform my visual language.” Tom Burbidge (b.1990)
